E pluribus unum…
“From many, one”
The Gwinnett School of Math Science and Technology's Music Department is comprised of a diverse student body providing an enlightening and enriched learning environment. Students at GSMST come from all over Gwinnett County, bringing with them a variety of musical experiences. Music instruction at GSMST is tailored to meet the needs of this diverse student body. Every student is different, but with our students coming from so many places, we work diligently to meet student needs based on the prior educational experiences. To participate in the Music Department, students only need to have studied privately on their instrument or participated in their middle school music ensemble.
The Philosophy of the Music Department
While our school is focused on intensified math, science, and technology instruction, GSMST believes that a well-rounded student should study a variety of academic disciplines. GSMST's integrated approach to education displays this commitment. Through curriculum integration, sutdents realize the natural bridges lying between all academic disciplines, including music. For example, while studying fractals in math class, music students might study the concept of a or in their music class, mosaics in their visual art class, and parts of speech in their language arts class.
Therefore, it is the philosophy of the music department to integrate instruction within our Instructional Collaborative Teams (ICT) and, through this integration, instill within our students a lifelong appreciation, passion and understanding of how music integrates into their lives.
As our students leave GSMST after graduation, this appreciation, passion, and understanding may display itself in a variety of ways. Students may become music majors or minors in college, study electrical engineering or physics to work in an area of music technology, or simply become lifelong patrons of the arts. Even if our students only become better listeners and display an appreciation for the artistry and academic processes of music, we will have been successful in our mission.
